Acceptable Quality

Also known as: quality guarantee

In plain English

Goods you buy must work properly, be safe, last a reasonable time, and look acceptable for what they are.

What it means

Under the Australian Consumer Law, goods sold to a consumer come with a guarantee that they are of acceptable quality. This means they are fit for all the purposes they are commonly used for, acceptable in appearance and finish, free from defects, safe, and durable, judged by what a reasonable consumer would expect given the price and any description. This consumer guarantee cannot be excluded, restricted or modified by any contract or 'no refunds' sign.

How it's used

A new fridge that stops cooling after three weeks is not of acceptable quality, so the buyer can claim a remedy.
