Interlocutory

In plain English

A decision or application made along the way, before the case is finally decided.

What it means

Interlocutory refers to steps, applications or orders made during a proceeding but before final judgment. Examples include applications for an injunction, for discovery, or to adjourn or strike out a pleading. Interlocutory orders manage the case as it progresses and usually do not finally determine the parties' rights. Appeals against interlocutory orders are often restricted and may require the court's leave.
