Our Queensland client lent money to another person, and expected to be paid back.
He wasn’t. Asking politely didn’t work.
He came to ezylegal on a no-win, no-fee* basis. Within about two weeks, he had 100% of his money back, without going anywhere near a courtroom.
At a glance
- Problem: Money lent to another person wasn’t being repaid.
- Claim against: The borrower.
- Legal basis: Recovery of a debt owed under a loan.
- Result: 100% of the money repaid, before any court claim was filed, for a small fixed fee.
When asking nicely doesn’t work
Lending money to someone you know is easy. Getting it back can be awkward. Many people chase for months, then give up because court sounds expensive and stressful.
Our client didn’t want to give up, and didn’t want a drawn-out fight either.
Stepping in
ezylegal reviewed what had been lent and what had been agreed, then contacted the borrower on our client’s behalf. We set out what was owed, and made it clear that court action would follow if it wasn’t paid.
The outcome
The borrower repaid the money in full. Our client got back every dollar he had lent, within weeks of coming to us, and without filing a court claim.
How do I get back money I lent to someone?
Start with a clear written demand. If that doesn’t work, a letter from a lawyer is often enough. If it still isn’t paid, you can sue for the debt, plus interest and costs.
Plenty of borrowers ignore a friend’s messages but pay quickly once a lawyer is involved and a court claim is the next step. For many small debts, that’s all it takes, and it costs far less than going to court.
If you’re facing something similar
If someone owes you money they borrowed:
- write down how much you lent, when, and what was agreed about repayment
- gather your bank transfer records, texts and emails about the loan
- ask for repayment in writing, with a clear deadline
- don’t wait too long, as debts get harder to collect over time
Get advice early, because time limits apply. Read more about debt and contract disputes.
ezylegal operates on a no-win, no-fee* basis across consumer, commercial and insurance disputes, so you’re not weighing the cost of a lawyer against the cost of walking away.
