What it means
The Australian Consumer Law guarantees that services supplied to a consumer are provided with due care and skill. The provider must use an acceptable level of skill, knowledge and care, and take reasonable steps to avoid loss or damage. This is one of the consumer guarantees for services. If a service is done carelessly or incompetently, the consumer can seek a remedy such as having the work fixed or recovering the cost of the failure.
How it's used
A plumber who installs a pipe so poorly that it floods the kitchen has breached the guarantee of due care and skill.
