Express Warranty

Also known as: warranty against defects, voluntary warranty

In plain English

An extra promise a business makes about a product, on top of your automatic consumer rights.

What it means

An express warranty (often a 'warranty against defects') is a voluntary promise by a business or manufacturer to repair, replace or refund goods if something goes wrong within a stated period. The Australian Consumer Law requires these warranties to be in plain language and to state that their benefits are in addition to consumer guarantees. A warranty cannot reduce your statutory consumer guarantees. Even after a warranty expires, the consumer guarantees may still apply.

How it's used

The dishwasher came with a two-year express warranty, but its consumer guarantee rights lasted beyond that period.
