Terms and Conditions

Also known as: T&Cs, contract terms

In plain English

The rules and promises that make up a contract — what each side must do, and what happens if something goes wrong.

What it means

Terms and conditions are the individual promises and rules that make up a contract. They can be written, spoken, or partly both, and they set out each party's rights and obligations, such as price, delivery, payment, and how the agreement can end. Some terms are express (clearly stated) and others are implied by law. In Australia, standard-form consumer and small-business contracts are also subject to the unfair contract terms regime under the Australian Consumer Law, which can make one-sided terms void.

How it's used

Before signing up to the gym, Liam read the terms and conditions and noticed a clause requiring 30 days' notice to cancel.
